Description: Thomas Liddall Armitage, was born at Knowsley Terrace, Boundary Lane, West Derby, Liverpool in 1855, fourth child of Thomas Liddall Armitage (1819-1867)

a commercial clerk, and his wife Mary

Stubbs, a schoolteacher, who married in the West Derby district of Lancashire on 16

September 1845. In 1861, a 6 year old living at Court 7, 9 Shambles Street, Barnsley,

Yorkshire with his parents, 42 year old Thomas and 42 year old Mary, with four siblings Jane Bason 12, Mary 9, John Edward 8 and William Henry 3. Young Thomas married at Silkstone parish church, Wortley, Yorkshire on 6 June 1878, Kate Marshall Wells and in 1881 was described as a 'grocer & wine merchant' while visiting friends at Ossett-with-Gawthorpe, Yorkshire. As an artist, must have spent some time in France, where he

had a will drawn up in Paris dated 9 January 1886 with the main beneficiary being his

wife. In 1891, a 35 year old artist living at 43 Blenheim Crescent, Notting Hill,

Kensington, London with his 34 year old wife Kate and a 3 year old son, Edward Liddall, born at Kensington. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1890-1897, exhibiting

from 43 Blenheim Crescent in 1890, two oils 'A Rocky Shore' and 'A Rustic Belle' and

six others 'The Apple Gatherers', 'Marguerite', 'In the Shade', 'An Anxious Watcher',

'A Sunny Shore' and 'By the Summer Sea', but did not exhibit again during his eight

year membership. In 1891 he exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery and at the Royal Academy from 43 Blenheim Crescent. In 1911, a 55

year old artist still at 43 Blenheim Crescent with his wife and now two sons and had

staying with them artists, 42 year old Robert Christie (1870-1928) and his 47 year old artist wife Lily Wrangel Christie (1861-1948); and 23 year old artist Emile Antoine Verpilleux (1888-1964) and his wife Grace, who came from Felixstowe, Suffolk. He died at

Blenheim Crescent, Kensington, London on 16 April 1924, aged 69, and his wife died in the Brentwood district, Essex in 1942, aged 86. His son Edward Liddall Armitage (1887-1967) was a stained-glass artist.

 

The beautiful gold gilt frame is a bit later to the painting.
