Louis Bosworth Hurt is principally known for his expressive and moody paintings of West Highland cattle in their landscape. Passing storms and dramatic skies, with light that bursts through the clouds and streams flowing down the hills. Highland cattle which are crossing rivers, old drover's roads, the Isles and the seasons all feature in his works. These features and the mountainous landscapes he painted with an inspiring hand is his signature. Hurt was born in Ashbourne in Derbyshire Peak district and did paint the Derbyshire moors at times; however it was the wilderness of the northern Highlands that inspired him most. A prolific painter, Hurt exhibited a total of thirteen paintings from 1881 onwards at the Royal Academy in London and twenty-six at the Royal Society of Artists on Suffolk Street.
