John Wilson Carmichael was an English marine and landscape painter born in 1799 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A former shipwright and seaman, he became renowned for maritime art, depicting naval battles, ports, and seascapes, with works exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. Commissioned during the Crimean War by the Illustrated London News, his celebrated Bombardment of Sveaborg is held at the National Maritime Museum.
